Galilee Sports Day | Banksia Wins Overall Shield & Sheoak Awarded Spirit Cup!

Galilee Sports Day was full of energy, with strong participation and teamwork across all sporting events.

Congratulations to Banksia, who won the whole school relay and the Overall Shield, while Sheoak was awarded the Spirit Cup for their enthusiasm and teamwork.

A big thank you to our amazing Sport Captains for their work in the lead-up and on the day. We also appreciate our parents and caregivers who came along to support, making it one of the biggest sports days to date.

Year 12 Retreat Sets the Tone for Final Year

Last week, our Marian Year 12 students left for their Retreat, marking a significant milestone in their final year at Cardijn College. The cohort gathered at Laeken before departing in their house groups to various retreat locations.

The retreat provided students with an invaluable opportunity to step back from their everyday routines, allowing space for reflection, deeper connection, and personal growth.

As our Year 12 students continue their journey through their final year, the experiences and insights gained from the retreat will serve as a foundation for the months ahead. The friendships fostered and the moments of reflection will support them as they face both the challenges and celebrations that come with Year 12.

Marcellin's Term 1 Success Assembly

At Marcellin, success is defined individually for each student and measured by the achievement of meaningful goals through hard work and persistence.

At our Success Assembly, we acknowledged students who excelled in:
  • Academic Achievement in SACE or VET
  • Marist Characteristics
  • Employability Skills
  • Attendance
We recognise their dedication and congratulate the following students:

Holy Week at Cardijn College

During Holy Week, the College community engaged in a series of meaningful reflections and prayerful activities across our campus.

On Tuesday, our Year 3 Galilee students celebrated Palm Sunday during a Mass led by Father Dominick. They reflected on the significance of Holy Week and the call to love as Jesus did. As part of their learning, students created palm leaves to wave in welcome, symbolising their desire to welcome Jesus into their hearts. They then shared these with their Year 1 buddies.

Wednesday saw the Galilee community gather once again to celebrate Palm Sunday, this time beautifully led by our Year 1 students. Through music, symbols, and storytelling, they vividly portrayed the significance of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem for our faith community.

In remembrance of Jesus’ journey to the cross, each class from Reception to Year 9 at Galilee thoughtfully created a Station of the Cross. Throughout the week, students participated in prayer walks, pausing at each station to pray and reflect together as a community of faith.

On Thursday, both Marian and Marcellin engaged in Stations of the Cross, thoughtfully reflecting on each moment of Jesus’ journey. Marcellin students then shared in the tradition of enjoying hot cross buns together.

As we enter this sacred season, we wish all our families a joyful and hope-filled Easter.

Marist Basketball Carnival Recap & Student Reflections

Last week, 19 students and 5 staff travelled to Newman College in Perth, proudly representing Cardijn College at the annual Marist Basketball Carnival.

This national competition offered our students a wonderful platform to demonstrate their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Both teams performed admirably: the girls' team achieved an impressive 4th place out of 9, while the boys' team finished 6th out of 18.

Reflections from Year 11 & 12 students:
“I really enjoyed the Marist Basketball Carnival because of the opportunity to play a lot of games against good competition, which helped my confidence and development as a player. The off-court experience was also great, because we got to spend a lot of time together as a team.” - Nathaniel, Year 11 student.

“The Marist Basketball Carnival was a very exciting experience to be a part of, and I feel privileged to be invited to represent Cardijn. The carnival connected over 20 different schools across Australia that are a part of the Marist community. The carnival gave me the opportunity to make new connections, strengthen friendships, and connect better with our Marist way of life. Most importantly, as a Year 12 student, it allowed me to reflect on my basketball journey with Cardijn and the improvements I've made along the way. It has created a lasting impression that I will be able to look back on as a highlight of my time at Cardijn.” - Nelson, Year 12 student.

“Marist Basketball was a great way to connect with our fellow Marist schools from across the country in friendly competition. Cardijn placed 4th in the Girls division, which is the highest the college has ever placed. The boys finished 6th, which was a great effort. Basketball aside, we had a great trip as a team and shared many wholesome moments together, exploring Perth, shopping and sharing meals together. The Marist Basketball carnival experience was a great way to round out my experience of Basketball at Cardijn.” - Grace, Year 12 student.
Beyond the results, the carnival was a memorable and rewarding week for everyone, with students developing their Marist characteristics, building strong team connections, and forming friendships with peers from schools across the country.

Marian Year 8 Drama Students Welcome Galilee Year 1s for a Magical Performance with Costumes Designed by Year 10s

Throughout this term, Year 8 Drama students have worked diligently to prepare their Children’s Theatre performances, centred around the theme of ‘light’. In Week 8, we were delighted to welcome Year 1 students from Galilee to Marian’s Theatre to watch the Year 8s perform.

Throughout this unit, students took on roles as actors, stage managers, or sound and lighting technicians, gaining experience in all aspects of theatre.

Children’s Theatre performances are characterised by over-exaggerated acting, audience interaction, and lots of colour. This year, the Year 8s had the unique opportunity to work alongside the Year 10 Fashion Design students, who brought to life eye-catching costumes and props based on design briefs written by the Year 8s.

This process required creativity through up-cycling and reusing existing materials to craft everything from a full-body caterpillar costume to bunny ears and paws!

Marcellin's Be a M.A.T.E. Raffle Drawn

We are excited to share that Marcellin’s ‘Be a M.A.T.E.’ raffle was drawn in this week’s Success Assembly.

This raffle recognises students who consistently demonstrate what it means to Make Safe Choices, Act with Respect, Take Responsibility, and Engage & Aspire as part of our PBIS framework.

Throughout the term, teachers nominated students who consistently upheld our ‘Be a M.A.T.E.’ expectations in their learning, behaviour, and engagement across the campus. These students received raffle tickets, and we celebrated their ongoing positive efforts with a special prize draw.

Term 1 winners:

Year 10 student, Ezekiel
Ezekiel walked away with a Bianco top, hat and stress ball pack.

Year 10 student, Jack
Jack chose a Nexphase screwdriver kit

Year 12 student, Savannah
Savannah selected a Nexphase pack that included a hat, a tape measure, a pack of Sharpies, and A specialised spirit level.

We’d like to thank Bianco and Nexphase for their generous donations in supporting our college with our PBIS initiative. Congratulations to all students who were nominated and to our raffle prize winners!

Year 10 Science Behind Baking Students Master Profiteroles

In their final assessment for the Science Behind Baking unit, our Year 10 students step into the role of pâtissiers, crafting delicate profiteroles with precision and flair.

Through the art of pâte à choux, they demonstrate their understanding of aeration, steam expansion, and structure, transforming simple ingredients into light, golden choux buns.

Filled with a smooth crème pâtissière and finished with a glossy ganache, each element reflects both technical skill and scientific knowledge.

This task is not just about presentation, but about mastering the chemistry of baking, where timing, temperature, and technique come together in a true pièce de résistance.

Student Sports Achievements

Ollie and Lui Win Division 2 Softball Title

Year 6 Galilee students Ollie and Lui recently represented Onkaparinga South Districts in boys’ softball, finishing 1st in Division 2.

Both boys showed strong skill and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Well done, Ollie and Lui!

Year 10s Express Creativity Through Expressionism

During Term 1, Marian’s Year 10 Art class explored the art movement of Expressionism.

Students researched and analysed the work of both historical and contemporary artists within this style to understand the key features of Expressionist artworks.

They then created final portraits inspired by their chosen artists, utilising a range of materials including acrylic paint, watercolour, gouache, and charcoal.

Well done to all the Year 10s for their creativity and effort!

CITB and Career Driven Programs Empower Students for Construction Careers

This week our Year 10 and 11 students heard from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) about the benefits of signing up for a CITB number, which gives students access to funded training, industry programs and financial support across the building and construction sector.

CITB supports a wide range of trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, bricklaying, concreting, tiling, painting, plastering, civil construction, plant operations, and other core construction pathways through endorsed training and subsidies.

Students also learned about Career Driven, which provides up to $600 in funded driving lessons, a huge help for young people preparing for work placement or apprenticeships.

We encourage any student considering a construction pathway to apply for their CITB number and make the most of these opportunities.

Empowering First Nations Education: Insights from the Marist Schools Symposium in Sydney

On Monday, Ms. Woolcock, Ms. Lekkas, and Ms. Hart represented the College at the Marist Schools Australia National First Nations Symposium in Mascot, Sydney. First Nations Focus Teachers from across the country gathered to share their insights and experiences regarding the learning of First Nations students.

The symposium provided a valuable platform for focus teachers and support staff to discuss the successes and challenges faced by young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Key topics included student learning, whole school community, culture and identity, and staff formation.

Significant goals identified included increasing the visibility of culture within schools, enhancing Elder presence, and fostering meaningful, authentic celebrations. Professional learning and immersion days were designed to equip teachers with culturally safe and respectful practices. Additional priorities included further activation of School Reconciliation Action Plans and strengthening family and community connections to support student learning.

Overall, the symposium was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and connect with educators dedicated to enhancing outcomes for First Nations students in both regional and urban contexts.

Message from the Deputy Principal

As we come to the end of Term 1, we take this opportunity to reflect with gratitude on all that has been achieved across the Cardijn College community. It has been a busy and rewarding start to the year, filled with learning, growth, connection and many moments of shared achievement.

Our students have embraced new opportunities with enthusiasm, our staff have continued to guide and support with dedication, and our families have played an important role in helping make this first term such a positive beginning to the year. As we now pause for the Easter break, it is a valuable time to rest, recharge and spend time with loved ones.

At Easter, we are reminded of the enduring message at the heart of our faith: that even in times of uncertainty, challenge and disruption, hope remains. In the Resurrection of Christ, we see the promise that light overcomes darkness, and love triumphs over fear.

In a world where many continue to face hardship, conflict and uncertainty, the hope of Easter remains both powerful and deeply needed. As a faith-filled community, we are called to be people of compassion, peace and encouragement, bringing hope to others through our words, actions and care for one another.

Please see Archbishop O'Regan's 2026 Easter Message:

Wishing all members of the Cardijn College community a safe, restful and blessed Easter weekend and holiday break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 2.

Kate Bawden
Deputy Principal
