24.08.20

The Cardijn Year 7’s are through to the Grand Final after battling through an intense two rounds of knockout football. The boys put together some convincing results in round one of the Southern Zone, defeating Reynella Primary, McLaren Vale Primary and All Saints to progress onto round two against the quality outfits of Stirling East and Westbourne Park.
On a cold and windy day, the young Cardijn team showed maturity during the first game, defeating Stirling East 2-0. Cardijn went one ahead after a Dan Burnett cut back that resulted in a goal. The boys continued to dominate in possession with Lincoln Hurrell and Alfie Myers anchoring the midfield. Just after half time, Hurrell sent a rocket into the top corner from 20yrds to cap off an emphatic 2-0 win.

Needing to win in the second game, the boys were determined to end the day on a high and knock off a well-structured Westbourne Park team. Coaches Puccio and Lang implemented a change of formation leading into the game and the Cardijn team responded, creating three gilt-edged opportunities but without any reward. The boys went into the half-time break deadlocked at 0-0.

As Westbourne Park started to press, ‘Maldini-like defending from Nardo Mancini and Jay Peacock kept the scores even. Goalkeeper, Khamron Glass did his job with a stunning save from a long-range free-kick. Cardijn smartly slowed the tempo down as the midfield trio of Jye Howes, Alfie Myers and Lincoln Hurrell found more of the ball. With 10 minutes to go, the pacey Charlie Maillard pounced on an error from the opposition goalkeeper to tuck the ball home.

1-0

he boys dug deep until the final whistle, defending as a unit and soaking up more pressure than a ShamWow. As the final whistle sounded, the Cardijn Year 7s celebrated in joy as they cemented a spot in the grand final.

Coaches Puccio and Lang congratulated the boys for their collective efforts, enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the two rounds and look forward to the grand final on Monday, September 14 at The Parks Football Centre.
