Cardijn Connect W7, T3 2023

07 September 2023

During Week 6, Cardijn College Marian Campus recognised Asia Week. The primary objective behind this celebration was to foster a deeper understanding of Asian societies and cultures.

This vibrant week was brought to life through a series of engaging activities and events including paper crane crafting sessions, a K-pop party, a sushi-making class, an array of Asian food market stalls, and entertaining performances showcasing Indonesian dance.

Thank you to the staff and students who took time from their week to assist in the festivities!

Last week, students attended the annual Australian Band and Orchestral Directors Association (ABODA) Band and Orchestra Festival, drawing in 143 participating bands and orchestras from SA schools, hosted by Westminster. Big Bands 1 and 2 represented Cardijn on Friday, aiming to both compete and gain insights from experienced adjudicators Ross Irwin and Nick Mulder.

This marked the first time we have entered two bands in the Stage Band divisions — Novice and Intermediate.

While Big Band 1 has been a regular at the ABODA festival, this year's outing was particularly rewarding as we took home a Silver Award! Making their debut, Big Band 2 directed by Mr Brad Tucker brought home a respectable Bronze Award - a promising start to their ABODA journey.

The festival provided our students with the chance to listen to various bands and appreciate the musical dedication of peers from different schools. Each school was tasked with performing a designated test piece for their division alongside an additional piece of their choosing.

Marian Campus Music Coordinator Chris Weber was the commissioned composer for the test piece in the Novice Stage Band division, titled "Broken Hip Blues." Our students had the opportunity to observe diverse interpretations of this composition across the schools in attendance.

We are delighted to share that our Galilee Aerobics Team finished in 1st place at the National Schoolaerobics Championships at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, making them the national champions!

This result is a great reflection of all the hard work the girls have put in, giving up their own play times for the past few months.

Their competition performance was judged on a number of compulsories being executed well which included synchronisation, showmanship and artistic composition. The girls improved in all of these areas since the state qualifiers.

Thank you for the support of all families involved, committing to a few early Saturday mornings to get the girls to the competitions. A special thanks also to their fantastic coach Ms Andrea Pengilly for her hard work and dedication to this team.

Congratulations to our Marcellin students and staff who took on the incredible feat of walking from McLaren Vale to Adelaide CBD last Friday, with the aim of raising much-needed funds for Hutt Street Centre. The total raised from fundraising efforts was $6869 which will go directly to supporting those experiencing homelessness in South Australia. Thank you to all who supported this cause.

If you would still like to show your support for Hutt Street Centre, the Marian Campus YCS team has also organised a walk to support the Walk a Mile in My Boots fundraiser and to raise awareness and funds for the 7,000 people experiencing homelessness in South Australia. You can make a donation at the following link: https://www.walkamile.org.au/fundraisers/ycs11307/walk-a-mile-challenge-23

In light of NAIDOC Week, we are thrilled to share our vibrant new mural created by the talented Scott and Ashalea from Rusted Tin - Contemporary Aboriginal Arts.

Students wanted a brightly coloured mural to brighten up the space and highlight our diverse community. Students worked with Scott and Ashalea to first describe our community and draw some symbols that represented those words. Scott and Ashalea then took those images and created this amazing piece of art. The artwork that now brightens up the student plaza, represents how as a school community we should let kindness guide our actions and respect shape our interactions.
