From the Principal

29.10.15

Welcome to Term 4 which brings many exciting events including our farewell of our Year 12 students next week, their final Mass and, of course, their exams. Term 4 began in earnest with our subject selection process for students in Year 10 and 11, summer sport and the first bout of hot weather. On the first day we were surprised but delighted that the builder’s huts which have occupied the roundabout and drop off zone for the last three years have disappeared. It is great to see our main entrance to the school return to normal. I know that students are delighted that their pick up and drop off is now at the roundabout. A reminder to parents that the roundabout is a drop off zone only and not a parking area. We will soon have an additional 120 carparks available adjacent to our existing carpark. I extend my gratitude to Mr Johnny Ioannou, Business Manager of Cardijn College, for managing these vital projects, Tredente Architects who have had a very long association with our building projects and Hansen and Yuncken the builders.

School Leaders
Last term, I announced Emily Bennet (11CH) and Michael Ellis (11RO) as School Captains for 2016. I am also delighted to announce that Jack Humphries (11LO) and Alice Chizmesya (10FA) are appointed as the Mission Captains for next year. This week, I am delighted to announce the appointment of 28 Senior School Student Leaders as Captains and Vice-Captains of their respective Houses.
In addition, we have also appointed the Sports, Music and Drama Captains for 2016. The names of the successful students are listed in the newsletter. Congratulations to all students appointed into a leadership position.

Building Progress
Last Friday we were delighted to receive the keys to the new Music Centre, which provides for specialist learning in music technology, a recording studio, an auditorium which will easily sit 90 people and specialist private tuition and ensemble rooms. The building is equipped with high end technology which enables recordings to occur in each studio, centrally managed through the recording studio. I know that the music staff and students are very excited about moving in. It looks like a house warming party is being organised by the parents and friends of Music.
Thank you to the corporate sponsors Willunga Charter, Tridente Architects, Wallbridge & Gilbert and Heinrich Consulting. We also thank both current and past families and staff who generously donated to the paver appeal. The pavers with names are now proudly resting at the entrance to the new Music Centre.

Parent Satisfaction Surveys
A big thank you to parents for your time and effort to complete the parent satisfaction survey. A report of the survey is being prepared for the school board to be presented next week. I hope to have a full report available for our families in the near future. You have provided valuable information about many aspects of the school and we want to take on-board your wisdom so that Cardijn can continue to improve.

Old Scholars Reunion
At the end of last term I was delighted to attend the 10 year reunion of the Class of 2005. This class was the first group that graduated in the year that I started my principalship at Cardijn. It was terrific to hear about what has happened in the past 10 years. Word and news quickly spread on Facebook. Thank you to Isabel Botha (graduate 2005) for her leadership in organising the reunion. The class of 1995 was very quick to respond and plan their 20th year reunion early next year.

Congratulations
Our 2015 soccer season concluded last Saturday with two final Cup matches played. Our U18 Girls team played as well as our Year 9A (Red) Boys team, both winning the grand final of the Cup competition in their respective divisions. Our Year 9A (Red) Boys team went through the season undefeated. This is a great credit to our Soccer coaches Mr Sean Lang (9A Red team), Mr Steve Freeling and Mr Tom Monsigneur (U18 Girls). It is also a great credit to our Soccer Academy program which is now well established after six years. We will soon announce some major developments with our program for 2016.

We congratulate Indiana Crowther (8LO) who starred in the soon to be released movie “A Month of Sundays” starring alongside Anthony LaPaglia. At the recent premier of the movie it was judged as outstanding with a score of 4.7 out of 5. Indy stars as the estranged son of Frank Mollard (Anthony LaPaglia) a real estate agent. Indy has worked hard at the role and we congratulate him on his success. A trailer is now available on YouTube CLICK HERE. We are confident that we will see Indy in other roles in the near future.

Staffing
We welcome to Cardijn Ms Hannah Priest who has been appointed as Ms Nicole Brown’s replacement for the remainder of the year. Nicole and her husband Phil welcomed the birth of their first child this week, a boy named Declan Philip Brown. Nicole and Phil are graduates of Cardijn College in 2005.

We extend our condolences to Mr Tom Morris on the recent passing of his mother, Merle, and we also extend our condolences to Mr Rob Dvorak on the passing of his mother Irena this week.
