Cardijn Connect W10, T1 2023

Our Reception students have been learning about Jesus throughout this term and during Holy Week they reflected on some of the important events of his life. They learnt about the story of Palm Sunday through participating in Godly Play and told this story in their own way through drawing. Each day they shared the symbols of Holy Week, by opening their Resurrection eggs and telling the stories. On Thursday they gathered in the Church to celebrate the story of the Last Supper with a special Liturgy. The students prayed together and reflected on the ritual of sharing bread and wine, as symbols of Jesus’ body and blood, that was given for us. 

On Wednesday, the Galilee community gathered outside to share in the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross. We were led by the students from Year 4 Westover, who enacted six of the stations and some of our school leaders, who told the story and lead us in prayer. We reflected on using our hands for good and to show kindness and compassion to others. We were also reminded of the seeds we planted on Ash Wednesday, that we have cared for throughout Lent. As we journey towards Easter with hope, these seeds are symbols of new life and renewal.  
 

Lent is a time of compassion and thinking about others through our words and actions. Project Compassion provides the opportunity to learn more about communities that are supported by Caritas and how their lives are improved through our help. Throughout Lent, staff and families have been invited to give what they could to the Project Compassion campaign. On Thursday, classes were invited to bring their coins to the hall where we created a symbol with all of the coins and money, as a way to reflect on how we helped others during Lent. We thank you all for your support and know that our money will go a long way towards supporting Caritas to help communities in need. 

Last week the Year 9 students from Galilee went to the Migration Museum in the city as part of their topic on the Making of a Nation in HaSS. This term the students have been learning and investigating migration to Australia from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visiting the Migration Museum enabled the students to put what they had learnt in context from a South Australian perspective, as the exhibition shared the journey of migration, mainly from European settlers into South Australia. 

Galilee Middle School students have developed their understanding of character strengths throughout Term 1. We congratulate these students who have demonstrated these character strengths and received awards as part of a celebration at the end of the term.

It was another successful Sports Day for the Reception to Year 6 Galilee students last Friday. Congratulations to team Wattle (yellow) who won the overall Sports Day shield.  Banksa (red) took home the Spirit Cup. 

Wattle also ran out victors in the whole school sprint relay - a new event to Galilee this year.  

Our individual Spirit Award recipients for Years 3-6 were recognised for showing great team spirit in their homegroups as they moved around to each athletics event.

Marcellin Campus employs an Industry Engagement & Employment Field Officer who works closely with external stakeholders to support Marcellin Campus students in becoming work-ready and prepared for life as a valued employee.

Tanya Sanchez is our Industry Engagement & Employment Field Officer and part of her role is to encourage students to organise work placements in areas of interest to them. She liaises with students, their families, and external stakeholders when students are offered work and develops a personalised plan to suit all those involved, with the end goal being SACE completion, along with a trade-based job.

Since the commencement of the 2023 school year, 14 Year 12 students, along with 7 Year 11 students, have been signed up into School Based Apprenticeships in various trades, including: 
Automotive, Engineering, Commercial Cookery, Plumbing, Electrical and Bakery.

Students are encouraged to come and introduce themselves to Tanya and make an appointment if they would like some advice, assistance, or support. Her office is located across from the Café and next to IT.

Glenn Miller, who has been the Marcellin Campus Industry Consultant for over 15 years commences Long Service Leave heading into retirement from 6 April 2023. Tanya will also be on leave for the first six weeks of Term 2. To cover this time, and to support Tanya when she returns, we have been fortunate to secure the services of Andrew Parkes who joins the campus from MTA in May.

We acknowledge our talented Music students who were involved in the Ensemble Music Night held on the Marian Campus recently. Guests were treated to musical performances by Concert Orchestra, Vocal Jazz, Cardijn Rock Band, String Ensemble, Cardinal Blues, Middle School Vocal, Drum Line, Senior Vocal Ensemble, and Big Band 1. The student-led concert was hosted by our Music Captains, with audio mixing run by VET students.

"Last week the Year 12 students from Marian Campus came together to experience our 3-day retreat. The houses were combined to head to their retreat locations which consisted of Nunyara, Woodhouse and The Monastery. This experience brought the cohort closer as not only was it a welcomed breath of fresh air from the stresses of Year 12 but it also gave opportunities for reflection, vulnerability and most importantly dancing.

Retreat gave us the opportunity to celebrate all that has been achieved throughout our journey and to be able to plan and put thought into goals for the future, whether it be at Cardijn or after.

Highlights of the retreat were learning the dances for graduation and the small moments throughout the day or at dinner with the fancy dress ties and tiaras. The memories and connections made will be a core memory for the Class of 2023 and could not have happened if not for all the hard work from the teachers, staff and MET. This is the beginning of many memories and we cannot wait to see what the rest of the year has to offer."
